I had sketched on a napkin a set of three triangles to depict a progression of American political positions. The triangles revealed the values of Constitutionalists, party loyalists and judicial activists. Upon reflection, each friend began to adjust his view. In other meetings, many admitted to having different leanings than that which they had once espoused. My triangle questions don't cast aspersions on any one party; they only help one clarify his position. It becomes a self-persuasive process from there. The American Constitutionalist position is the only framework that allows for open and honest debate for Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians, Conservatives, Liberals and Moderates since it is based on the Constitution -- the "Rule of Law".  Party loyalists and judicial activists do not serve the American People, they serve themselves by following the "Rule of Man"; politics over the past 30 years have moved significantly toward the latter.

 

“We the People” are in a great Civil War - one not of blood, but of philosophy and words. Today, with so many more history lessons to draw from, we are no better at defending our respective positions than in 1861.  Instead of North and South, we are Democrat and Republican. We ask how anyone could fight for the South during our Civil War when he or she believed in human slavery based on states’ rights.

 

On the other hand, how did the North believe in freedom based on national rights? Slavery, in any form, is enough for any fair person to deny, since it violates the nature upon which this country was founded.  So why did the South, white or free black, defend slavery first with words, then blood? The answer: It was purely economic. Raised as a loyal supporter of the Democratic Party many times I blindly defended party policies, simply because I was a Democrat. Over time, I saw the horrendous impact of those policies on fellow Americans. I started to question party policies; but the response was: “The Party knows best”. This reaction was no different than when a Southerner questioned slavery within his State prior to the Civil War; he would ignore the tragedy around him and be loyal to the State.

 

Today the word party is substituted for state; but we face a different kind of slavery, socio-economic slavery without bounds. The threat of slavery is currently being driven through the Democratic Party. It seeks to control every element of our lives: Health Care, Education, Retirement, Relationships, Breathing, Cooking, Bathroom Products, and more. Democrats and Republicans share one critical weakness we must all address; they both stretch the Constitutional framework to their respective advantage. In so doing, they weaken our democracy, which is grounded in Constitutional Law.

 

Despite this weakness, I believe the two-party system is the most effective worldwide.  Thus, I enthusiastically enter the race as a U.S. Senator from Maryland. I am an American Constitutionalist running as a Republican. Just as Abraham Lincoln ran to abolish human slavery; I run to abolish the Federal intrusion over Maryland sovereignty and the chains that enslave us.

 

It is you, the citizen who matters - not the Party. Please elect me as Maryland’s next US Senator. Step back from your Party and see where your principles are best met, based on candidates’ ability to legislate and act within the framework of our U.S. Constitution.
